Harry Kuhn honored for six decades of dedication and excellence to social work
SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J. June 11, 2010 /Religion PR News/ -- Cambridge Who's Who of Uniondale, Long Island, New York, has announced that Harry F. Kuhn III is one of its VIP members who has been selected as "Social Worker of the Year 2010" for his six decades of exemplary commitment in serving the needs of students and families throughout central New Jersey. Mr. Kuhn, as an undergraduate at Montclair State College, Upper Montclair, New Jersey, majoring in Spanish, had two internships, one providing social caseworkservices in Paterson, NJ in 1966 and another one tutoring students at Eastside High School, Paterson, and Central High School, Newark, NJ in 1967. Mr. Kuhn led a student movement from 1965 to have the College's 60 year-old single-gender dormitory policy changed to coeducational in 1968. He was successful also, as president of the Newman Apostolate, to have the College's president, Dr. Thomas A. Richardson, authorize the first celebration of a Roman Catholic Mass on a State college campus in New Jersey. Mr. Kuhn, as President of the Senior Class of 1969, was elected into Who's Who among Students in American Colleges and Universities for his progressive leadership in having dormitory policy changed and freedom of religion experienced at a public institution of higher education. Mr. Kuhn's two achievements are his legacy to enriching student life on campus at Montclair State University.
Upon graduation, Mr. Kuhn became a bilingual caseworker for the Essex County Welfare Board in its Cuban Refugee Program, a federally-funded public assistance program for Cubans granted political refugee status, from 1969 to 1973. During his tenure with the Board, Mr. Kuhn earned a Master of Arts degree in general psychology from Montclair State College. In 1973, Mr. Kuhn began his 30-year career as a school social worker for the Rahway (NJ) Public Schools. He was assigned to a child study team to conduct social assessments, develop individualized educational programs for students with educational disabilities, respond to crises, and to provide psychotherapeutic inventions and counseling. Mr. Kuhn was case manager for students with autism, learning disabilities, and traumatic brain injuries, multiple disabilities, and emotional disordered behavior, which required in-district special education programs or out-of-district placement in specialized day schools, depending on the severity of their individual needs.
In 1978, Mr. Kuhn earned his Master of Social Work degree from the Graduate School of Social Work, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick campus. With his MSW, Mr. Kuhn's school social work practice focused on the mental health needs of all students. He was well respected for his effective psychotherapeutic counseling skills with students troubled by anxiety, phobia, depression, mood disorder, suicidal ideation, or other mental health diagnoses. He also was known for helpingchildren and their families through his contacts with local non-profit community social services and charities including, the Rahway chapters of the Junior Service League, the Elks, the Kiwanis, the Rotary, and the Lions Club.
For three months following the 9/11 terrorists' attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001, Mr. Kuhn volunteered his professional services in the evenings and on weekends at the FEMA-organized WTC Family Assistance Center in Jersey City. During that time, Mr. Kuhn was part of the New Jersey Crisis Response Team from Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. He helped WTC witnesses and victims to receive help from the American Red Cross, the United Way, the Salvation Army, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, New Jersey State Police, and the Center's mental health social work clinician.
Upon his retirement from school social work in 2003, Mr. Kuhn established a private practice specializing in forensic biopsychosocial assessments, school social work assessments, psychotherapy and consultation, clinical supervision of licensed social workers, and peer mentorship. Presently, Mr. Kuhn is a doctoral student at the International University of Graduate Studies, St. Kitts & Nevis, United Kingdom, preparing his dissertation on the effect of psychotherapeutic social work interventions on student academic achievement in collaborative partnership with teachers and parents. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and its Academy of Certified Social Workers, the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work, and the School Social Workers Association of America. Mr. Kuhn has published, under peer review, several professional articles and books reviews.
