Author Stephen Larsen, PhD, Wins More Book Awards - Two Silver Nautilus Awards (Psychology and Religion) for The Fundamentalist Mind: How Polarized Thinking Imperils Us All.
Stephen Larsen PhD's latest book The Fundamentalist Mind, about mythic thinking and how we are conditioned by and attached to belief systems, has won two silver Nautilus Book Awards (Psychology and Religion).
LOS ANGELES, CA, July 12, 2009 /Religion PR News/ -- Stephen Larsen, PhD, award-winning author and Psychology Professor Emeritus from SUNY Ulster, New York, has won two silver Nautilus Book Awards 2009 for the ideas put forth in his latest book The Fundamentalist Mind: How Polarized Thinking Imperils Us All (Quest Books). The Nautilus Silver Awards are in the categories of Psychology and Religion. Larsen's book also won Foreword Magazine's Best of the Year Award in the Psychology category.
"The Fundamentalist Mind is about 'mythic thinking', about how we are conditioned by and attached to belief systems we know, and I believe that misunderstood mythology creates a world of peril for all of us," states Larsen, a widely admired psychologist. "It is an inherently human habit we all engage in when we are least self-aware. It is this kind of thinking that drives some people to the extremes of religion..... I want readers to feel good," continues Larsen, "my goal is to give them a way to both understand and talk with people of differing viewpoints."
The Nautilus Awards were "conceived to recognize and reward a group of world-changing books, to celebrate how they contribute to positive social change, and to stimulate the 'imagination' and inspire the reader to 'new possibilities' for a better world," write awards founder Marilyn McGuire. Past winners of this prestigious award have included His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Deepak Chopra MD, Jean Houston PhD, Frances Moore Lappe, Carolyn Myss PhD, Norman Shealy MD, PhD, and Eckhart Tolle.
Larsen was on the faculty at Ulster from 1968-1996. In 1990 he opened Stone Mountain Counseling, PC, for psychotherapy, biofeedback and training where he continues to serve as its director. He is a world-renowned pioneer in the use of neurofeedback for trauma and depression.
In addition to The Fundamentalist Mind, Larsen wrote the widely acclaimed The Healing Power of Neurofeedback: the Revolutionary LENS Method for Restoring Optimal Brain Function (Inner Traditions/Healing Arts Press 2006). He has also written The Shaman's Doorway, the Mythic Imagination, and with his wife Robin Larsen, he co-authored A Fire in the Mind: The Life of Joseph Campbell. Larsen was a Joseph Campbell friend and protege.
