RABBI HONORED FOR PROGRAM SERVING SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN

Mintz Family Foundation for Creative Jewish Education Award To Be Presented In Los Angeles, May 27th, 2005

/24-7PressRelease.com/ - Las Vegas, NV - May 12, 2005 - Lag B'Omer is a day of communal celebration in Judaism, a time traditionally set aside for honoring educators. When better for the Mintz Family Foundation for Creative Jewish Education to honor a very special teacher for her wonderful work with families of special needs children?

On May 27th, 2005 Rabbi Yocheved Mintz, President of the Mintz Family Foundation, will present this year's award to Rabbi Shawn Fields-Meyer for her innovative "Ozreinu" Torah studies, a program that delivers remarkable spiritual support for Jewish parents of children with special needs.

The award presentation, corresponding with Lag B'Omer, will take place at Lowe's Beverly Hills Hotel. That Friday morning, Rabbi Shawn Fields-Meyer will be feted and will receive a check from the Mintz Foundation for $5000, in recognition for her important work. The ceremony will be immediately followed by a reception in the Rabbi's honor.

The Mintz Family Foundation for Creative Jewish Education was established in 2001. It was created to recognize and reward innovative Jewish educators across North America, supporting creative Jewish education and training, through an annual monetary award. The Mintz Foundation addresses innovations on all levels, and in all forms, of Jewish education: From formal classwork to casual teaching, pre-school through graduate school. The sole goal is encouraging innovation, by recognizing and rewarding creativity of an individual or an organization.

Applications are already being accepted for the 2006 Mintz Family Foundation Award. Educators (or those wishing to nominate innovative educators) are invited to visit the Foundation's website at www.MintzFN.org for details, or to mail The Mintz Family Foundation for Creative Jewish Education, 2045 Grouse Street, Las Vegas, NV 89134.

Those wishing to support the Mintz Foundation, and its mission to reward those who improve the quality and creativity of Jewish education, are encouraged to contribute. Of course, all contributions go directly toward supporting the annual awards, and are fully tax deductible.

The Mintz Family Foundation for Creative Jewish Education 2005 Award Ceremony and reception are scheduled Friday, May 27th at 8:30 AM, in the Lowe's Beverly Hills Hotel. For further information, and an opportunity to meet and talk with both Rabbi Yocheved Mintz and Rabbi Shawn Fields-Meyer, contact The Mintz Family Foundation for Creative Jewish Education, (702) 869-2700.

BACKGROUND

Ozreinu, Hebrew for "our help," is a spiritual support group for Jewish parents of special needs children; sadly, a service few have previously provided.

Monthly Ozreinu meetings begin with study of selected Jewish text, followed by individual "check-ins;" personal reflections of lessons learned through the text, as they affect the imposing challenges facing these unique children and their parents.

An example from Rabbi Fields-Meyer's application: "A session on Moses at the burning bush yielded an exchange about how parents view their children ? the "fire" burning within them that seems destructive, strange, unnatural, yet also brings light and warmth.... This accomplishes two goals: Strengthening the sense of being part of a caring community; and acknowledging blessings despite the hardships ? no matter how hard things get."

Rabbi Shawn Fields-Meyer is an instructor of Bible and Liturgy in the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at the University of Judaism, currently on a one-year Sabbatical. The Rabbi is a graduate of Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, and was ordained in 1998. She serves as scholar-in-residence for several synagogues and Bureaus of Jewish Education

Rabbi Yocheved Mintz is a long-standing Jewish educator, the first woman among 17 generations of Rabbis in her family. President of the Mintz Family Foundation for Creative Jewish Education, Rabbi Mintz was ordained from the Academy for Jewish Religion, in California, May of 2004.

"Jewish education is a lifelong pursuit," according to Rabbi Mintz, "a joy of Judaism that can offer a path to inner peace in our very troubled times. We are excited that we can encourage and reward those who move Jewish education forward."
